Radical Love – Professor Omid Safi

Date: Wednesday 27 March, 6pm

Venue: Cambridge Muslim College, 14 St. Paul’s Road, Cambridge CB1 2EZ

Love-based devotion and poetry have always been at the heart of the Islamic tradition. With the development of the school of Islamic spirituality known as Mazhab-e ‘Eshq (Path of Divine Love), these were elevated to an even higher zenith. This lecture will present some of the masters of this sacred path, with special attention to Mawlana Rumi, ‘Attar, Ahmad Ghazali, and Kharaqani. Muslim mystics began with a bold claim: that there is ultimately One Love, a love that emanates from God’s own being, brings us here, and will deliver us back to our celestial home. The talk is open to all, and no previous exposure is required.

Omid Safi is the director of Duke University’s Islamic Studies Center, and his new book Radical Love: Teachings from the Islamic Mystical Tradition has been recently published by Yale University Press.

This is a free event and no registration is required. The book can be purchased here.

*The lecture will be recorded.
