Research Fellowship in Religion and Science
Cambridge Muslim College invites applications for the post of Research Fellow to be based at the College’s facility in Cambridge, United Kingdom, for one academic year with effect from 1 September 2017.
The College seeks outstanding candidates who are currently working as scientists or are engaged in scientific research and who will make a major contribution to the College’s intellectual life. During his or her appointment at the College the post-holder will be expected to complete a significant research project in the area of religion and science, preferably taking the form of two articles for peer-reviewed publications. Fellowship applicants are encouraged to submit applications to research a topic falling within biology, cosmology, physics, cognitive science, or neuroscience. Applications for research in bioethics, environmental ethics and any other area of applied ethics will not be considered. Successful applicants will also be required to organise a conference on a religion-science related matter towards the end of the post. The Fellowship includes a one month stay at the Istanbul Foundation for Research and Education. The appointment to the post is contingent upon on a finalized grant agreement being in place with the John Templeton Foundation.
The College is looking to appoint candidates who can evidence an interest in and commitment to theology. Such candidates should be able to outline an area of research that they intend to work on while on the Research Fellowship and then outline how they intend to continue working on this particular theme after the Fellowship. The aim of the Fellowship is to offer protected time to working or research scientists so that they can focus or pursue an area of theological interest which they can continue after the Fellowship.
In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to offer a maximum of six lectures, participate in seminars and attend the College’s public lectures on behalf of the College.
I have a mom with 4th stage of breast cancer. Severe pain in the back from metastases in the spine is observed. Corticoids did not help much as they gave swelling and shortness of breath. After radiation therapy, the pain passed but fell into neutropenia. Now the pain appeared again (that’s just today that we stopped the breakthrough pain in the hospital). The successful applicant will be expected to begin on 1st September 2017 and the post will continue to 31st August 2018. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to the aims and ethos of the College. The Research Fellow will be given access to the College’s library, office space and equipment, and administrative support. The successful applicant will be remunerated at a rate of £37,000 per annum. The College has a responsibility to ensure that all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK. The deadline for applications to be received at the College is 10.00am, Monday 29th May 2017.
Applicants should submit a covering letter, a personal statement, curriculum vitae and two sealed letters of recommendation. The personal statement should describe the ambitions and interests of the applicant and an outline of the research project that the applicant would undertake during the period of engagement. Inclusion of published work would be an advantage.
