FACILITIES
What should I expect from public facilities?
Only squat toilets are available in public restrooms. You are advised to carry a hand sanitizer and tissue packets with you.
Will you allow facilities and time for prayers?
Itineraries have been prepared around the prayer times. Most prayers will be observed in the mosques, which have facilities for women.
FAMILY
Can I bring my children?
Children aged 10 and above are welcome to join the tour.
FOOD
What about the food?
To fully immerse in the Javanese culture, all meals will be locally prepared. Breakfast and dinner will be served at the hotel. Depending on the schedule, participants may have lunch either at the site or at a restaurant.
What if I have dietary requirements?
All food is halal. However, due to the style of food preparation in the areas we are visiting, we are unable to accommodate allergies and specific dietary requirements. Local food usually contains traces of nuts.
HEALTH AND FITNESS
Is the travel physically demanding?
Several sites may be physically demanding, including hiking and climbing uneven steps. You may choose not to ascend and wait for the group at the base.
INSURANCE AND PROTECTION
Is insurance provided?
No. You are advised to purchase your own travel insurance to cover any health issues and/or baggage loss while travelling.
MONEY
Should I bring cash?
Yes. Please bring enough cash for personal expenses. International credit cards are not widely accepted.
PARTICIPATION
Do I have to partake in all the lecture programmes?
No. However, due to security issues, we would ask that you stay with the group.
TRAVEL AND TRANSPORTATION
Do I need a visa for Indonesia?
You do not need a visa if you are travelling with a British, American, Canadian or Southeast Asian passport. Please refer to this image to determine whether you need one.
How should I plan my travels?
If it is too costly to travel directly to Surabaya, we recommend booking a return flight to neighbouring cities such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Jakarta first, then flying separately on domestic Southeast Asian airlines such as AirAsia to Surabaya and from Yogyakarta. Singapore has the smallest and most modern airport, and perhaps is the easiest to transfer onto a domestic airline.
Participants should aim to arrive at Juanda International Airport (SUB) in Surabaya by 2.30pm on Saturday, 19 October. If this is not possible, then aim to arrive in time for the three shuttle services we aim to provide: 11am, 3pm and 7pm.
Three shuttle services from the hotel to Yogyakarta Adisucipito International Airport (JOG) on Saturday, 26 October will provided. Departure times TBC.
What if I want to make my own way to the hotel from the airport and vice versa?
We advise downloading Grab (the Uber equivalent for Southeast Asia) on your phone. It will cost approximately £12 to travel to and from the airports in Surabaya and Yogyakarta. The app is widely used in all major cities in the island of Java. https://www.grab.com/id/en/
What will land travel during the tour be like?
We will be travelling from the east to central Java by bus and train. Traffic congestion is common.
WEATHER AND PACKING
What will the temperatures be like?
Warm (28-33°C) and humid weather with regular rain. Apply sun block, wear a hat and carry an umbrella.
What should I pack?
Pack light. Given the humid weather, we would recommend packing linen clothes and cotton wear. There will be no laundry services, so do plan for change of clothes to keep you comfortable. Please wear comfortable shoes/sport shoes and open sandals. Do take note that we will have to remove footwear at every site.
